Born and raised in Penrith, Dr Shanil Dhanji is a locally trained Ophthalmologist with advanced expertise in medical retina, cataract and vitreoretinal surgery. He also specialises in inherited retinal diseases, uveitis and ocular oncology.

Dr Dhanji completed his medical degree at Bond University, graduating with the Vice-Chancellor’s Award, followed by a Master of Medicine in Ophthalmic Science at the University of Sydney. He trained in Ophthalmology at Sydney Eye Hospital and is a Fellow of both the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists and the International Council of Ophthalmology.

He has completed three renowned retina fellowships: Medical Retina at Westmead Hospital with Professor Paul Mitchell; a combined Medical Retina, Inherited Retinal Disease, Uveitis, Ocular Oncology and Vitreoretinal Surgery fellowship at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Canada; and an intensive Vitreoretinal Surgery fellowship at UBC. He also holds the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Diploma in Retina.

Dr Dhanji has been recognised with the Sydney Hospitallers Norman Rose and RANZCO Trevalyn-Smith Scholarships and serves on RANZCO’s Professional Conduct Committee. He has authored over 40 international research publications and presentations, and is an active member of ANZSRS, ASRS, ARVO, COS, CRS, EURETINA and VBS.

Dr Dhanji is currently a locum specialist in both medical retina and vitreoretinal surgery at Sydney Eye Hospital.
